Ball burs are primarily used for accessing cavities in posterior teeth and proximal anterior teeth, excavating decayed tissue, and removing contaminated dentin. Smaller-diameter burs (1/4, 1/2, and 1/4 in) are used to create additional retentions in the form of holes and/or flutes for metal restoration preparations, and are also useful for accessing incipient lesions. The remaining burs (larger diameter) are used for removing decayed dentin (low speed) and occasionally at high speed for opening cavities; the indication varies depending on the size of the lesion.
