Spherical burs are mainly used for accessing posterior tooth cavities, proximal surfaces of anterior teeth, excavating carious tissue, and removing contaminated dentin. Smaller diameter burs (1/4, ½ w 1) are used to create additional retentions in the form of holes and/or grooves for metallic restoration preparations, and are also useful for accessing incipient lesions. The other burs (larger diameter) are used for removing carious dentin (low speed) and occasionally at high speed for cavity opening: the indication varies depending on the size of the lesion.
